Massage therapy involves the physical manipulation of the soft tissues of the human body. Massage techniques may be applied by hands, fingers, thumbs, elbows, forearms, thighs, feet, or an automated device. The aim of massage is usually for the relief of pain or body tension. Massage may be applied as a part of an overall body care routine or on its own. A massage therapist has the knowledge and skill to stretch, isolate, and manipulate the muscles and connective tissue of the client. When receiving massage, the client lies face down on a massage table. The client's body is supported in a reclining position with arms and legs comfortably flexed.
